Depict Film Reviews

The dinosaur

This short film is a simple but effective concept about a man who wakes up alone in the mountains with nothing but a sleeping bag to protect him from the harsh weather. He then arises seeing a dinosaur in the distance then calmly lays back down.
For me this short film stood out amongst the rest because of how the viewer can interpret the film in different ways. It can either be seen as the whole thing is the man dreaming or it could be a real life situation which is happening in real time. It leaves the audience with a real sense of almost confusion as to what could happen next.
I liked the simplicity and how easy it was to follow.
The use of sound works well too with just the sound of wind then a slow fade into music towards the end.
The director has also managed to get lots of shot types in. For example, two establishing shots. One a bigger look on the area then we cut to the second shot which is more focused and pans on the mountain. My personal favourite shot is at the beginning when we see a close up of the man emerging from a sleeping bag. To me it looks like something emerging from a cocoon or a flower. It connotes life in a sparse place.

Rubber Guillotine

This short film is about a teenage girl who goes about daily life talking to herself about aspirations, parents and other weird things.
It begins by being in everyday situations, a cafe and dry cleaners then spirals into quick talking and creates an almost stressful situation for the audience as things are happening quickly which makes it hard to keep up with.
My favourite thing about this is the quick shots, it keeps it interesting and they are also all different, some are close ups, long shots and it includes lots of tracking and panning too. The more you watch it the more you start to see into it and because it is a teenage girl it is quite relatable which some of the other films aren't so on that aspect it is unique.

America, I think?
Although this film is completely different to every other one that I've seen it works well to convey a story about American life through stop motion drawings.
The drawings are simple but easy to follow and understand the story behind every one of them. Just from watching the opening sequence I could tell that it's about holidays to Disney and the surrounding areas.
Sounds like = car radios, children screaming on rides and coins in machines are used throughout to convey a sense of reality and believability in the place they are at.
