History of music videos

History of music videos

1. The first official music video released is Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen and was directed by Penelope Spheeris and Bruce Gowers. It was released in 1975 and was a video made specifically for the song unlike other videos from bands such as the Beetles. It only took four hours to film and cost around £40,000 to create. It then only took 5 hours to edit and was then broadcast in the same week being aired on Top of the Pops.

2. Before music videos existed artists would perform their songs to get more recognition and air time. Top Of The Pops in Britain on Britain was the original place to see new music and the top musicians once a week and it broadcast weekly from the 1st January 1964 until the 30th July 2006. These existed because there was limited TV channels unlike today but also no internet to be able to just search them. If you wanted to see a specific performance you would record the Top Of The Pops and re watch it. In America a show called Shindig! aired in 1964 it was a variety show which included performances from rock and roll musicians.

3. In 1980 David Bowie released a music video which included brand new editing styles. It is still believed to be one of the most expensive music videos ever created costing around £250,000. It had visual effects throughout and used green screen for almost all of it too. The songs lyrics are about his addiction to cocaine and how he struggles to overcome this addiction. Also within the video it uses lots of references to The Wizard Of Oz which is known to be one of his all time favourite films. It could also be seen as using the film as a distraction from the drugs.

4. In 1981 MTV original launched a new TV channel which would exhibit music videos. It was the first to only show music videos so became the channel that everyone would want to watch for new releases. Video Killed the Radio Star by The Buggles was the first to be shown.

5. In 1984, Laura Branigan released a song called Self Control. MTV and other American music platforms refused to play it. This is a quote from Branigan - "The song was about losing your self-control to the night or to someone," Branigan added. "We had a man representing the night, wearing a mask. There were all these great dancers wearing masks by Willa Shalit. There's a shot where the man comes into my bedroom, taking me into the night. He appears and disappears. MTV didn't play it. They said it was risqué. It was played in Europe and everywhere else. I didn't think it was bad at all."

I can see how the video could be seen as something that could potentially promote men taking advantage of women at the time however, for her it was an artistic video she created.

6. In 1984, Thriller by Michael Jackson was also released. The video is almost like a mini horror film which is something which was rarely done even today. It lasts 14 minutes and was popular because it included elaborate choreography, costumes and dialogue. At the time VHS was at its most popular however, many tapes would be quite expensive. So when Jackson released a beta copy of Thriller just before Christmas which also included "The making of Michael Jackson's Thriller" for $25 it quickly sold nine million units and became a Guinness world record holder for the top selling music video.

7. Ah-ha Take on Me was released in 1985 and used rotoscoping. As the video was so different to what was out at the time Warner bros played it in the cinema before their movies started to allow it to gain more popularity. The video is created by animators tracing over real footage, frame by frame.

8. In 1986, Peter Gabriel released Sledgehammer. It is a fun animation, stop motion video which is still MTV's most played video. It was nominated for three grammys and won a Brit for best video as well as winning nine VMA awards too. It is popular because it is so different and the concept is weird making people want to watch it multiple times.

9. Janet Jackson and Michael Jackson released scream in 1995 and is still the most expensive video to ever be made costing 7 million dollars. Part of the large cost was building large space like sets in the span of two weeks and the easiest way to do that is gathering a large team and putting lots of money into the project.  It also required lots of work in post production and editing which would have added to the cost.
