The Story of Film: An Odyssey (Birth of the Cinema)

Birth of Cinema (1895-1920)

What was the episode about? -
This episode began by talking about George Edison and how he created film with the black maria room which meant that one at a time people could see little clips.

The Lumiere brothers then decided that this wasn't a good way to watch it and used components from a sewing machine to show film to bigger audiences.

From this documentary I have learned that lots of the techniques we use today were actually mistakes that became a huge part of how film moved forwards.
It was also interesting to see the different views of people who still believe in film today. For example, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire which was released in 2013 was shot on film and then processed and uploaded so it could be edited digitally. Although many are also saying that it is the end of film as it is more expensive and time consuming when actually filming.
